The school nurse at Montowese Elementary School is Mrs. Cheryl Rapuano.
The role of the registered professional school nurse has broadened in the school setting as it becomes more universally accepted that health and learning go hand in hand. Nurses in the school setting enhance the educational process of students by the modification or removal of health barriers to learning and by the promotion of an optimal level of wellness.
The goals of the school nurse, as stated in the North Haven Public School Nurses Procedure Book, are to prevent health barriers from interfering with students' educational process through the means of assessments, diagnosis and planning, intervention, evaluation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and management.

Absences:
If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, you are requested to call the school and notify the school nurse. You can do this by calling 239-2564 and leaving a message in Mrs. Rapuano's voice mailbox - ext 5102. Be sure to leave your name, your child's name and the reason for the absence.
Illness:
In order for your child to be available for learning and to control communicable disease in school, it is very important for you to keep your child at home if your child has:
- a temperature over 100 degrees. Your child should remain at home in bed for the day and should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school as many children rebound with a temperature.
- been diagnosed with a strep infection. Your child should be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
- vomited during the night or in the morning.
- persistent diarrhea during the night and into the morning.
- a moist productive cough, chest congestion, or discolored nasal discharge.
- red swollen eyes that itch and are draining pus.
If your child has been diagnosed with a communicable illness, contact the school nurse to discuss when your child should return to school. Examples include, but are not limited to chicken pox, impetigo, scabies, hepatitis, lice, and ringworm.
